Finding Peace When Life Changes

Graduating college, starting a new job, having a baby, moving to a new state — these are just a few of many major transitions we might go through in life, and they have a way of turning our worlds upside down. As we attempt to adjust to a new “normal” that’s filled with unknowns, questions and doubts can begin to creep in — and so can anxiety.
But, these changes can also stretch and grow us in amazing ways. God uses uncertainty and discomfort to draw us closer to him; and, the Bible says that, because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence (Ephesians 3:12) where we experience joy, peace, and rest from the anxiety and burdens we carry.
He also pushes us to rely on the people around us — to seek stronger, deeper community with other believers who can listen, encourage, and support us, especially on the difficult days.
Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10:24–25
When we’re surrounded by loving community, we can share openly about our doubts and fears, and some of the unhealthy ways we might be coping with change; and, we can begin to acknowledge our weaknesses. This is when God does his best work:
Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9–10
Looking back, how have you seen God work in your life during a major transition? Take a moment to thank him for this.
Maybe you’re preparing to make a big change right now. What thoughts are going through your mind? If you’re battling anxiety today, consider memorizing this promise:
Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10
